You may be surprised to hear that a simple outfit of a fitted t-shirt and jeans is a great choice for a men’s portrait session. But it’s true! If you’re a man, this ensemble should be your go-to whenever you’re gonna be photographed. Most often, a woman looks best in a fitted dress (more about that in the post: Clothing Choices: Colors and Styles for Your Portraits ). And a man looks best in a tailored shirt or jacket. However, you many not own a tailored jacket, so start digging through those t-shirts. If you don’t have one, go buy one. Easy peasy–just a short trip to the department store. Not only will you look great in your photos, but you’ll also save yourself a whole lotta time on portrait day.
“Fitted” in garment terms means that it “hugs” your body. It’s not baggy or boxy. Baggy and boxy, as you can imagine, only make you look bigger than you are. If you’re shopping for a t-shirt for your session, then look for descriptions like athletic cut, slim fit, or fitted. Also, a shirt with a little bit of spandex in it’s construction will automatically be a little bit snugger, so give those a look as well.
What about your jeans? Do they need to be fitted? Not necessarily. But, choose a pair that actually fits you and isn’t sliding off of your hips or sagging in the crotch.
I promise you that you’re gonna get a more accurate depiction of you if you opt for the fitted t-shirt. It accentuates your chest and arms, which are the most robust parts of a man’s body (think about Superman’s body to get a visual if you need one). Highlighting you in this way makes you look more put together, stronger, and attractive. If you’re having trouble accepting this concept because it just seems too simplistic, try an experiment. Have a friend use their phone to take a quick picture of you in a stretched-out or over-sized shirt. Then have him snap a second one of you donning a fitted one. You’ll be wowed by the difference.
If you take this basic advice, not only will your manly shape look more defined and svelte, but you’ll also be totally confident at your portrait session because you’ll know you’ve made smart clothing choices. Most importantly, though, your pictures are gonna look great! Book that portrait session!
